8 areas in which fly research can have particular impact
Drosophila has been a subject of genetic research since the early 1910s. The following books provide background on the history of Drosophila research or focus on the contributions of leading fly researchers.
- Lords of the Fly by R.E. Kohler
- Time, Love, Memory by J. Weiner
- A History of Geneics by A. Sturtevant
In February 2016, several leaders in the Drosophila research field from the US and overseas met at the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to discuss the future of Drosophila research. One of the outcomes was a list of eight areas for which Drosophila research is poised to have particular impact. The eight areas are:
- the microbiome
- metabolism
- transgenerational effects
- organ communication
- neurological networks
- signaling networks and integration
- pharmacogenetics
- complex genetic disease models
